I have a BMW mini and one of the key fobs no longer works. (I got completely stranded till someone could bring me the spare, not good), do I have to go to BMW & pay their extortionate prices for a new fob or can anyone recommend an alternative?
Many thanks.

Do you need a new Fob, could it just be the battery?
When we lost our key we could only get a replacment from BMW, I had to take the log book and photographic proof of ID with me, they order it in from Germany and it came in about 2-3 days if I remember rightly.

If there's an alternative I'd like to know :)
Take the cover off the fob & replace the battery Dibble, whilst your doing this clean the contacts where the battery sits.
Does it start the car - if so it's just the battery that sends the lock/unlock signal that needs to be replaced.

Just google it with your precise model and 'replace keyfob battery' for instructions (or even a youtube video)

Morning TWR,
tell me, as a fellow BMW driver have you ever seen a BMW badge on a Mini?
;-)

It is a sealed unit, so the battery can't be accessed. I was told they re-charge themselves by the salesman when I bought it (from new),and wouldn't go wrong. I fear I may have no choice here. BMW make sure you can't go anywhere else.
Good morning Baldric, It's either the Cooper badge.

THankyou all!!!!!
If you google 'replacement I mini key fob' it brings up quite a few options.
Morning Tony, whats happened to Tops?
Morning TWR, no idea, he's disappeared again !.
Done some intense cleaning on the car about 3 weeks Baldric, rear of the front wheels behind the splash cover there is ledge just behind the mud flap, there was about 3" of wet salt / muck, just a tip for you.
I see after all the money he spent on that E46 he got shut.
Yeah, he gives up to easily !.

Cheers TWR it's due a bath later today, I'll have a look
Is it the 5 you have Baldric?
Talking of BMWs, just had to change a headlamp on my Z4. You have to access it from the wheel arch / pull down a clip fastener ( which took a screwdriver as a lever to do) then remove a waterproof box from a space which is JUST big enough. I felt like a fully qualified technician by the time I'd got the darn thing back together.

I used to have the coupe version Balders. Lovely engine, just got better and better the more miles went on the clock. 19k between services too.
