Poor quality materials in the first place? Material for road construction ageing out? And yes TWR, the question of the foreign drivers not paying still rankles, seeing the range of fees and tolls that OH had to pay last month to use the roads in Europe.

Weather? Are you sure?
Ed's taking the blame for things today but on a serious note...is lack of early maintenance a factor? We can't blame traffic....that's why the roads are there so perhaps make them fit for purpose?
You want somebody to say - all those blerdy foreign hvg trucks whizzing up and down on cheap fuel from the continent and the don't even pay road tax.

Well, I'm not going to. It stands to reason any road that has to cope with traffic is going to need ongoing maintenance and repairs.

I was not actually.

If motorways had to be patched as often as some of our minor roads nobody would ever get anywhere.

So obviously there are different standards of road in terms of robustness

I'll guess the major factors there are:

+ Cost
+ Age
+ Need to keep digging them up for utilities that results in patches weaker than the original

I guess the question is do we want to pay more for better quality road surfaces
HGVs are 100% to blame for the damage in layby's,ie. wheels on a pavement that wasnt designed for more than pedestrians..

Well, you were an HGV driver, so you've done your share!
heavy vehicles do most of the damage to the roads. Cars have very little effect.
We have a bypass around (not surprisingly) our local town build about 5 years ago which is in an appalling state. I can only put this down to shoddy construction in the first place. Are any of us close TWR?

Before you condemn the Heavies, check the Road Tax they pay.
So who, in your opinion is to balme for the road damage TWR?

You asked who had done the damage in your OP, NOT who paid the most!

Doing repairs on the cheap, have you not seen the wheelbarrow brigade?

no one is condeming the "heavies" the question was about who did the damage. There is no such thing as road tax. we all pay vehicle excise duty and the trucks do pay a wad of it so no doubt pay their share.
