If you get 3 points on your licence for speeding, do you have to inform your insurance company immediately?

Yes
If you don't tell your insurance Your car insurance is invalid if anything happens and you need to make a claim or involved in a crash or police do a stop check you can then get more points for invalid insurance and fined. When you do tell them about your points they will no doubt increase your payments. Then you have the 3points on your licence for 3years before you can get them removed,Unless like me you gain another 9points to make it 12 then get 6month ban and fine, then after the ban you get a clean licence again in less than 3years!
Failure to report does not invalidate your insurance - legally mandated third party insurance remains unaffected however any other claims (e.g. under a comprehensive policy) may be avoided or reduced.

Declaring the points may have no effect upon your current premium but that is for your insurer to decide.
Make sure you inform your insurers in writing, recorded delivery if possible and keep a copy of the letter. I notified my broker in writing about the points I got for driving like my hair was on fire. Last year when someone drove into the back of me at a set of lights I declared my conviction on the claim form. I then had a snotty, patronising letter from the underwriters asking why I did not declare this when taking the policy out.

Upon submission of evidence to the contrary the claim was settled and I got my excess back but my broker's card was marked. When they called me up to ask why I didn't renew my policy with them this year I didn't hold back in telling them why. A naughty word or two may have been uttered.
