In the U.S. they would be the same...
Basically, yes.
Both do the same job i.e. they rotate the camshaft at half the revolutions of the crankshaft. However the important distinction is that  cam chain has a long life expectancy and wear & stretch will become obvious with increased noise coming from the chain. Cam bekts being of a rubber compound have a finite life span - normally around 50,000 - 70,000 miles and must be replaced according to the manufacturers schedule. Failure to replace will result in a broken cam belt and catastrophic engine damage. Be warned !!

thanks. I think I have a chain rather than a belt but will check.

someone told me to be aware that i need to get the timing (chain/belt) changed at about 60,000 m and then someone else told me i need to get the cam (chain/belt) changed . just wanted to check that I will only have one or the other, not both!
Thanks againfor your help.
if its a cambelt...FIND OUT THE SERVICE INTERVAL FOR IT!!!! by contacting the manfacturer. Failure to replace it will very often be very costly!!!
