If you buy a decommissioned ambulance do you have to cover the blue lights and "emergency ambulance" signwriting if you intend to use it on public roads?

Not a definitive answer, but I would guess not as plenty of people 'exhibit' restored police cars, fire engines etc. You just would not be allowed to use the 'blues and twos' on the public highway.
I should imagine the blue lights and two tones would be removed prior to private sale.
Strictly speaking, you can not have blue lights on any non emergency vehicle while it's on the road even if they are inoperable and covered up. However, this law is normally overridden by common sense and as long as no blue lights could be seen the police wouldn't do anything.

Thanks all,the reason for asking is that someone in the neighbourhood has recently aquired a second hand ambulance which he parks in various locations. The problem is,some of the older residents see it parked outside a friends/relatives house and panic, thinking the worst! Incidentally i have a friend with police car ( Sierra 1 from The Bill ) and he has been told in no uncertain terms that he MUST cover the blues (on the roof) and the police logo (on the doors) whenever he takes it on the public highway!
I believe you can have them on at shows but would not be allowed to drive them to the show on the road. They should be removed or at least covered whilst being driven or parked on a public highway.
I saw an American police car on the motorway the other day.

Now that's class.
