Have taken the notion of buying a kit car to build myself. Has anyone had any experience of doing such a task and are there any manufacturers to stay clear of ?

Buy a kit car mag, the modern ones are a lot better than the older ones, avoid cars based on a V.W Beetle unless it's a Beetle replica it'll be s h i t.
The cheapest ones are the ones someone's bought and not finished (very common) the Royale, try this site for ideas.

I've always liked the Model A Ford replica myself.
Dutton used to be the stuff to avoid .. god, they made some cr@p.
Also, I would err towards GRP bodies, not Glassfibre alone.
What style do you want to build? there are several good and bad manufacturers that specialise in each style. Also what sort of budget, you can spend anything from £2000 on a kit car up to £60k+
