Is it true that a Kit car or modified car is actually cheaper to insure than a the factory standard.

I don't mean a Fiesta with a baked bean tin welded to the exhaust and some LED window washer jets.. more along the lines of a Toyota MR2 converted to Ferarri lookalike or an AC Cobra Kit car..

I'd love to make a "DIY" car but I was afraid of soaring insurance prices, but some random people say it's actually upto 50% cheaper than other cars.

Yes it's true. The theory behind it is that if you build the car or have something a bit different / special then you shall look after it and drive it carefullly. Also most kit cars are not used as everyday cars so therefore insured on a limited mileage. I used to insure my self bulit car for less than 100 !
Yes, very much cheaper, I have a modified 1957 Ford Pop, runs a tuned 2.0 pinto engine, uprated suspension, alloys etc. Fully comp costs me 135 a year (limited to 3000 miles) with Adrian Flux, and the added bonus of free road tax. that always puts a smile on my face every time I leave the post office with another free years tax :-)

I used to deal with modified cars in my previous insurance job.

The logic behind it is simple. People who spend a substantial amount of money on good cars (no halfords tat on their cars), and who drive classics, are more likely to look after the car and not create accidents driving like an idiot.

When I can afford it, I'm buying an Anglia!

thanks for the replies guys :D

I remember my uncle once mentioning Adrian Flux, so I might try them when I get around to getting my dream car.

All I need to do now is buy a house with a nice big garage to build it in. Oh, and make the other half realise that it's a good idea...
