The cambelt requires replacing after a certain period of mileage or after so many years. For example I have a Vauxhall diesel car which needs a new cambelt after 80,000 miles or after 5 years whichever is the soonest.

If you don't have your cambelt replaced there is the very real possibility that the old worn belt will snap which will put the engine valves and pistons out of synchronisation. This is disastrous and would result in the pistons snapping or bending the valves. An engine repair job of about a grand upwards.

You need to check with your Renault dealer on when you should have the cambelt replaced. You don't necessarily have to have it done by a Renault garage. I have found these to be expensive. You can shop around and get another garage to do the work cheaper. Make sure you get a receipt though and keep this as part of your vehicle history. You will have trouble selling a car if you have no proof that the cambelt was replaced at the correct service interval.

Also if you get a back street mechanic to do a cash in hand job there is no come back if he does it wrong and damages your engine.
Forgot to say -

When your car is MOT'd the mechanic will floor the accelerator (rev the engine as high as he can) to do a reading of the exhaust emissions. This puts lots of strain on the cambelt and if the car has an old worn belt it could snap during the MOT.

Difficult to say how much a new cambelt would cost to have fitted as there often pulleys and tensioners included in a cambelt renewal kit, depending on the make/ model of car. Somewhere between 150-300 I reckon for a diesel.

I wouldn't recommend doing the job yourself unless you are very good at car mechanics. If you do it wrong you will damage your engine.
After seafarers long winded but basically correct answer I will answer your question.

Should be renewed at 70,000 miles or every 5 years whichever comes first.

It is a cambelt on your car, it needs renewing with a full cambelt kit, this includes the cambelt, tensioners and a new auxiliary belt, it is also advisable to get a new waterpump fitted at the same time.

Renaults would charge around 475 for that but a good independant garage would charge about half that amount.
At least I can spell properly Tour.

Nnnnggghhh exclaims Tour as he thumbs through a dictionary....colostomy bag leaking all over his dog hair covered carpet......
