Renault Laguna gearbox prob.

I have a renault Laguna RXE 2L s 1998. The gearbox is ******** but there is no sticker or metal plate with a number identifying exactly which gearbox I need as a replacement. I called Renault UK who will give details just fron reg. No or chassis number but they say they have no record of mine. Date of first registration and date of registration in the UK is the same on my documents so I am assuming that it is not an import. Can anyone help with either another method of identifying the gearbox or explaining why Renault may not hold details
