I have just had my 10000mile 63 reg Vauxhall Viara serviced which I paid for when I bought the thing. I have been informed that they recommend a fuel additive in October and asked me to pay £17 for them to do it!! I would rather do it myself but was not cheeky enough to ask 'em which additive they use. Any suggestions welcome please. Chris

more sales for them.....not necessary if you wash with 'proper' fuel laced with detergent.

Yes, Bazile, it helps but can be achieved say in two or three successive loads. I have an old Audi and do usually two reg and one premium Shell (or Chev), unless I am running long distance and then its the premium...high sustained rev use helps burn off the carbon in the residual around the injectors and valve seats too.
One other one why this thread is around - if you have a vintage vehicle that requires a lead additive booster, avoid those based on tin.....they are kerrrrap and can cause serious damage to the engine valve seats if you have stress on the engine such as good hilly country to navigate.

Right ok - so my petrol light has just come on - i dont know what amount is left in the tank .

So just to clarify - your'e saying that if i'm going to try it - then purchase two or three successive premium loads from this instance .
Or would two or three successive loads from any amount in tank also work ?
Two full loads would be fine - generally you have about 5 litres left when the light goes on, Bazile, some 40 to 60 miles, I would say but that depends on what you drive - and conditions and how you drive.
Or a full load and then two half ones......
I have always use Wynns Injector Cleaner, each MOT the car passes the C.0 without no problem, £5 UK well worth the money.
