Not sure if this works but a friend recommended to me when i got a charge to phone up and threaten to change credit card companies then they drop it to keep you with them. (I phoned up but the woman let me off so i didn't try it).
You could try what has been suggested above but at the end of the day your payment was late and I don't see why you should be able to claim the charge back.

I can see where CheekyChops is coming from, really, but I also think that credit card companies and banks make obscene profits from people making genuine mistakes like you have.

In this case I would definitely phone up, politely, and firmly, and explain clearly that the payment was only 1 day late, it was a genuine, honest mistake, you are a good customer, and you think a charge is excessive and unfair. As previously suggested, making mention of the wide range of other companies which would be delighted to accept your business might be helpful. It never hurts to point out your disappointment with the company, and that you chose them because you expected to be treated like the good customer that you are. All this is, of course, assuming that you ARE a good customer ...

You don't think the late payment actually cost THEM anything like 25 do you?!

100% with Eels here.
According to your contract with the credit card - the payment WAS late and this results in a charge which they're entitled to apply. Strictly speaking, your question "where do I stand..." is answered, "you stand with 25 less in your pocket" but there's no harm in phoning them up and politely and firmly asking them to waive the charge as a goodwill gesture. If the first person refuses, ask for their manager.
Ask for an outline of their complaints procedure and how you can escalate it to the next level, and the one after that...
Also ask if they have a central complaints department that you can phone or write to.

i think these sites say it all really

What you could do is say that you had phoned up and spoken to someone and they had said that a direct debit had been set up and you assumed the minimum payment was going to be taken out and it wasn't (this happened to me) ... might be a bit late now ...
"A Direct Debit was set up? So you 'll have had written confirmation of that 14 days before the payment left your bank account then? You didn't think to ask us why nothing was set up on your bank account or why no letter was received?
You didn't hear any alarm bells ringing then, because I can hear them loud and clear right now you lying little toad"

I've won awards for customer service you know ;-)
This has only happened to me once and I had paid 1 day before the due date.I rang up and asked if they would waiver it and to check my account that I have never had any late payments and always paid in full and by paying in full they dont make any money out of you but I told them how useful there card was to me and a bit of a soft story so he said he would take half off so with another little soft sob he finally agreed to waiver it all 25 but I shall make sure it doesnt happen again as it states in the rules and reg. they have every right too .
