Has the mortgage added extra interest or penalties to your account? If so, have you paid it off in full? You could write to the lender and ask for a goodwill adjustment to your credit report, asking them to remove the late payments from your report. It will help your case enormously if you offer to pay by direct debit on the 10th of each month so that payment is guaranteed before the 18th. The mortgage company isn't obliged to cooperate but it won't hurt to ask.
