A small kitten nips playfully at my fingers. When she grows up I don't want her to think it's ok to pass the time chewing away at them. How to dissuade her from doing this?

When she does it pull your fingers away and say NO loudly and withhold strokes for a few minutes.
Repeat and she will learn that its not acceptable behaviour.
something unpleasant to the taste on your finger tips , iodine etc.
Common kitten behaviour. Teething.
Say OW quite loudly. Remove your finger slowly distract her with a toy but don't stroke her
Have to say Brice is now 6 and will still play at nipping my fingers on occassions
Sandy, are you kitten-sitting or is this your own baby?

This is common in cats and the majority of them do it. We have had several cats over the years and they have all done it. Cats do not respond to shouting and that will only make the matter worse. Never put anything like iodine on your fingers, as many things that are safe to humans are poisonous to cats.

Better ignore my suggestion sandy, though iodine isn't poisonous to cats or dogs & is used in fact to treat their wounds.

Wolf63,
I'm minding 3 cats and the new addition to the household, Polly.
An older cat, Rosy, is clearly jealous and sometimes hisses at the little stranger but she'll just have to get used to her.
In future when my fingers become targets for her attention I'll say no and move them out of harms way.

My fingers are stained with nicotine and I wonder what they'd taste, and smell, like to a cat.
Kittens grow out of nibbling fingers, just as they grow out of climbing curtains and chasing flies.

Don't worry about it. Just enjoy it while you can ;-)
I tried to find a nice cat picture for you but I got sidetracked.

This one is true

My brother is at war with his neighbour's cat. She saunters past him on her way to use the facilities, his vegetable garden. She just looks at him with pure disdain, safe in the knowledge that he can do f'all about the situation.

He actually finds it amusing that she doesn't care one bit that she is being a total pain. Her name is Polish for 'girl cat'.
LOL @ Hoppy ;-)
Cat's are incapable of hearing certain words:
No
Stop
Bad!
Down
Go Away
It's mine!

If you start a sentence with "Do you want...?" you can almost guarantee that they will come running.

>>> He actually finds it amusing that she doesn't care one bit that she is being a total pain.

That's simply displaying due deference to the cat ;-)

>>> Her name is Polish for 'girl cat'.

I didn't need to look that up. I can't remember much of what I learned at evening school, when I attempted to study Polish a few years ago, but 'kot' and 'kotka' are two words than I simply can't forget ;-)
I think that it is kotka. The old guy is Polish.

The cat just turned up on their doorstep and moved in. It has invaded Andrew's house a couple of times via open patio doors in the summer - just wait until it gets near to Leonard the Hamster, they are scary critters.

That sounds like a proper kotka then, Susan ;-)
Do you think that she knows that she isn't Polish but English?

A friend adopted a cat from a cat shelter only to find out that he was Romanian.

Sandy, are these the Spanish cats? Girl cats can be quite *** to each other - that may get zapped, it was the word for a lady dog.
