Sometime in the 40s or 50s I heard a radio play or story as -I think - part of the Valentine Dyall 'Man in Black' series.
But it might have been a stand-alone play.
The story was a horror about a burglar on his way to a 'job', and when he was knocked down by a taxi.
He got up and dusted himself down, then continued his journey via an underground station.
As he descended, the lighting became dimmer and the station took on an old and spooky appearance.
He was the only passenger on the platform, and as a train went by without stopping he could see all the passengers were dead and mutilated most horribly.
Something told him that his was the next train and that he must join the dead. As the train slowed to a stop he screamed.
He then found himself in front of the taxi again being helped to his feet by the very man whose house he was on his way to burgle.
The last words of the play were (householder) "You've had a lucky escape" and (burglar) "So have you"
Does anyone else remember such a story, and if so, what was it called? Or who was it by?
Sorry for such a long posting.

Shaftmonde. Sorry I don't remember that particular story, but this might make you smile, although it didn't make me smile at the time.

I was about 14yrs old, and one dark winter night my mum and dad had gone to the cinema, and my younger brother and sister were in bed.
I was listening on the radio in the kitchen to The Man in Black telling a very scary story which took place in a dentist's surgery. Now we had a piano in the sitting room, and just at the most scary point of the story, came the tinkle, tinkle, tinkle on the piano keys. I quickly shut the door to the adjoining room, and sat shivering and scared to death until my mum and dad got home. Only for Dad to discover that our kitten had managed to get itself shut in the sitting room, and was happily parading up and down the piano keys. I hope you enjoyed that little tale, and I hope you find the answer to your question. Best wishes. Schutz.
