Yes, it almost all cases, give us a specific example?
Yes. Gross misconduct....unless you're lucky enough to be a wine taster or something.
depends what you are drinking

depends what your company's policy is.
it is at my work, but i would imagine it wouldn't be for say a landlord (on the right side of the bar of course)
Depends on the job and on the company rules.
Are you in UK (offence) or US (offense)
-- answer removed --

well it wasn't for myself but something i overheard at work today.

Drinking but not caught, it was 'hear-say' apparentley some people gave a witness statement and there was no alcohol tests carried out, it happened over new years eve in some control room place I think iit was like a bus garage.
Totally banned in the oil industry for the majors, except in France where wine was classified as a local drink.

We used to joke that Exxon folk never touch Tanqueray Gin now - the Captain of the Exxon Valdez said, "I wanted a Tanqueray on the rocks, you idiot, not a tanker on the rocks."

it was brought up we work in an office for TFL but we work with control rooms and someone had an allegation against them

drinking booze..what else? water
It will likely go to an investigation hearing, the witness statement on one side and the version by the accused on the other. With no evidence other than hearsay and the one report, it could go either way. Depends how convincing both sides are and the potential danger the employee put themselves and others in as a result of being intoxicated (if it is decided that they were based on reports)
Question Author
by reports you mean statements
Yeah a written statement by the witness ( or report)

i think the guy had 3-4 statments against him, but it could be hear say maybe he isnt liked? i think its unfair treatment without evidence
My employers have a zero tolerance policy unless you are receiving treatment for alcoholism! I had the misfortune to work in a place that was just me and the caretaker and he was constantly drunk at work. I used to have to phone his wife to come and get him and just lock the place up myself, but nothing was ever done as he was getting counselling for it.
"Drinking At Work
is it a sackable offense? "

Is this a trick question?
Question Author
um no.?
It's unfortunate if as you say this happened at New Year, perhaps people thought they could be a little more relaxed - but rules are rules, and in a control room people ought to be just that - in control. It's a sacking offence where I work.
We had to sack a guy at 9am in the morning as he had drunk so much in to the early hours that he was totally unfi for work. He thought 4 hours sleep and a coffee would cancel out the 12-15 pints he must have had!
