Cos she isnt British, dur!! We have more than enough brilliant actresses who are just as good or even better than Meryl Streep. I bet she wont be able to do the accent properly either, not many Americans can, apart from Dick Van Dyke who nailed it in Mary Poppins, cor blimey guvnor!!

Sooper, do you think English Actors should only play English parts then. Actors are given parts because they can act. Perhaps Americans think English actors shouldn't play Americans, but they do - very often in fact.

Meryl Streep actually looks like Thatcher!! Any of the others mentioned just don't.

Loftylottie - As i have stated not many american actors/actresses can do a convincing English accent in my opinion. I also think that we have better actresses in this country than Meryl Streep who should be playing such an iconic role.
Yes your right the brits have taken america by storm over the last decade and there isnt many top drama's that dont have or had a brit cast in a major role within it. That is kinda my point our actors are better and is why they are being cast.
Here's just some of the shows ( that i could remember) that the brits have the lead or have major roles, quite impressive i think.

I appreciate what you are saying but I have just as much respect for Meryl Streep as an actress as I do for, say, Helen Mirren. I believe she is an incredible actress who has had such diverse roles. I am not usually a fan of American actresses in any way, but to me she is iconic!

Must say, lottie I was absolutely amazed when I saw the photograph of Meryl Streep as Maggie Thatcher. She looks just like her!
