Partially, perhaps, as the Poll Tax was first trialled in Scotland. Until the 70s Scotland split roughly 50/50 between Tory and Labour, with the odd Liberal in the far north.
Personally speaking, no.

And for the record, I know of at least one card carrying Tory who is voting Yes.

I thought that she was dead.

I liked Maggie - she was the only prime minister that we have had in my lifetime with balls. I didn't always agree with her politics but she was formidable.

In 1951 the cons and labour had 35 seats each. In 1979, the year of maggie coming to power it was cons 22 labour 44. In 1987 it was cons 10 labour 50. Make of that what you will.
Not much of an argument, wolf. Hitler was formidable, as was Stalin, Pol Pot et al...
No, but she made it 99.99% against the tories. I think my Father was the only Scot who liked Maggot.
The poll tax was a good idea, it meant I didn't have to subsidise my neaighbours.
Maggie with balls wolf63, I know talked a load of them ,but I never knew she had any, but there you go , funny old world isn't it.
Unlikely, gordie. The mutterings I'm hearing are more about the very long memories some Scots have (not without reason) about the way the English nobility treated the Scots, way back when.
jeffa - I think that she is blamed for much that she was not responsible for. Her personality was a little abrasive and this didn't help.

My basic understanding of politics leads me to believe that in this country there is good and bad in each party and they are (usually) trying their best to improve life for us all.

I can't argue with specific incidents/decisions - I don't have that knowledge or understanding.

I am going to vote NO. I would like us to be an independent country ~ but that would be my heart making the vote and not my brain, However the way my brain is misfiring these days maybe I should just use my heart.

This buffoon may also have played a small part:

I'm making my vote based on my hopes for Scotland's future, not my understanding of her past.
Obiter

I am almost sure that Mr Fairbairn was our MP at one stage. I know that he lived locally.
No! No! No!
The supreme irony is that the Tory party (if you could call it that in those days) originated in Scotland, comprised of supporters of JamesII/VII.

Rewriting history now Obiter ?

Sorry, but the first paragraph of your link confirms my statement.
" originated in Scotland," and, from the Wikipedia link- "traces its origins back to the "Tory" supporters of James Stuart, Duke of York, later King James VII & II," are two completely different unrelated statements.
