Why is there such a large majority of people renting homes in San Francisco, and possibly other areas in USA, rather than buying ?

it's not just the US, most of the world rent. Buying is a UK obsession.

In USA mobility is key in an uncertain labour market. Renting avoids negative equity and getting trapped.
