I am looking for a successful Russian businessman with the first name Pierre who owned a distillery in Moscow in the late 1700's. Apparently his surname is still a familiar one today. What is it?

P.S I immediately thought of Pierre Smirnoff (Vodka) but I don't think he was even born then! Are there any other famous Russian Pierre's?

Pyotr Smirnov?
There you are detective! We thought you'd passed away to the Great Fun Quiz in the Sky!
From wiki - The Smirnoff brand began with a vodka distillery founded in Moscow by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov (1831-1898), the son of illiterate Russian peasants. It is now distributed in 130 countries.

Pyotr and Pierre are the same name - Peter.

Date doesn't fit though
Great Fun Quiz question ' Detective'. Like Tallulah I wondered where you had gone. Please don't ask GFQ questions and spoil it for others.
Why not raise this on the query line re date?I don't enter the quiz so don't think it appropriate to raise query.
Try google, detective, because you can discover other famous Russian Pierres. You should know better than to dive in like you have!
Tallulah - is the date correct then?
loobylou,
I thought it was/is but I've only dabbled in the quiz so far. I just noticed detective was still alive and asking for answers to the quiz when we are not supposed to.
Ugh!!! Terrible grammar.
I wouldn't give help anyway as I find out my answers by myself and if I can so can detective and everyone.
There is always the query line and the one time I rang him, Bill rang me back straight away.
I wonder what you were before you were perfect Tallullah?
Found him!!
Loobylou - was the date correct?
Bill has only just updated the query line today, and his date states "around 1800" but he says "if you have found a date 60 years or so after this, don't worry about it, from different sources the dates vary wildly"...or words to that effect, so it seems the obvious one is the answer.

You see. People ask but don't give the answers when they've cracked it. I mean LL.
I was born Little Miss Perfect. The Vicar told me that.
Welcome back FreddieW!! How are you doing?
