Great Yarmouth is (at least on the face of it) a total dump. The sea front is full of shabby buildings, which have either closed down or function as 'chips with everything' cafs. The main road which leads to the seafront has little to offer except yet more cafs, loads of 'pound shop' type places and several amusement arcades. Even the leisure centre (which has had a bit of an overhaul recently) is rather outdated. (The swimming pool has a wave machine but that's about it).
Don't despair though. The area does have its attractions; it's just that they don't exactly leap out at you. Here are a few pointers:
1. If you're in GY when the market is open, it's well worth a visit. (It's one of East Anglia's better open air markets, as long as you can get away from the smell of chips coming from the covered area).
2. The Heritage Quarter is well worth a look:

(In particular, don't miss the 'Time & Tide' museum).
3. If the weather's good, and you want to find a really good beach, head to Yarmouth's southern suburb of Gorleston. (Unless, like me, you're a naturist. In which case I'll see you on Corton naturist beach, just south of GY!)
4. You can't fail to notice Europe's largest off-shore wind farm. There's a small exhibition about it, in a building on the sea front. (It's quite interesting, even though it only takes a few minutes to go round it).
