Can't tell you who Animal was based on but the guy who played him was Ronnie Verrell - in my opinion one of the best drummers ever. I would say he was even more mental on the drums than Animal! He used to play for most of the old big bands (Ted Heath, Syd Lawrence etc) but you'd probably know him better from the band on the Frank Skinner show. Sadly he died a couple of years ago.
