Is anyone else completely disgusted that 3million will be spent on a state funeral for Margaret Thatcher!! I am appaled, i mean there is the invention of a cancer-stopping jab which we cant have because of the expense. Surely money could be spent on that instead!!

The cost will probably go up to 30million when she dies in twenty years time aged 102.
So is it the amount, or the person that enthuses your derision?
This country needs a bit of pomp and ceremony now and again.

Both octavius.

But more the ammount haha
So if we send her up in a firework for 50k youd be happier?
It is an insignificant sum in the overall scheme of things.

It is also less than significant when compared to the cost of the funeral of the Princess of Wales eleven years ago.

Few will agree I know, but given the choice of having had no Mrs Thatcher or no Princess of Wales, I think I could have done without "The People's Princess" but many of us may be struggling more than we are now without Mrs T.
Question Author
I would prefer the Princess.

Its not the person or even the ammount of money, i just feel like money could be spent on something so much better.

Like saving lives!
Mrs T was the last British PM with any b@lls.

That says a lot for the men who've followed her.

In her day, the Special Relationship worked because Reagan was terrified of her, and she was in charge.

Nowadays, the Special Relationship involves British Prime Ministers cowering behind a Bush (sic) and following his every word.

Good luck to her, and I didnt even know she was dead until i read this thread. I must listen to the news more!! ;-))

A Viking funeral might be appropriate.

You know, set her adrift on an boat and then sink it. Sailing away from the Falkland islands would be a good place to stage such a ceremony.
Why the hell should the taxpayer foot the bill? Her family have enough money - if her crook of a son has managed to avoid assassination by the time she dies, he can spend some of his ill-gotten gains on a funeral for her.

As long as he remembers the proper precautions to prevent her return...
there is a jab that stops cancer?????
LeMarchand , are you thinking of a stake through the heart?
She's made of Iron remember, 3 million quid to put a pile of old rust in the ground..
Question Author
Dont you watch Dispatches bedknobs?

Would you rather spend money on -
Hospitals, schools + curing disease
or
A place where you can visit a dead old lady and laugh (which does sound interesting)
Oh Lord, here we go again!

I am disgusted that she is 'honoured' in this way - a state funeral should be reserved for the great and the good - she doesn't qualify in either creiteria.
how can "they" justify such a large amount????
It's not their money - but don't tell anyone, or else people will start to ask questions ... big questions ...
Yet another boring Thatcher-bash by people whom I consider to be wishy-washy flabby near-traitors. She was very very very popular in her day, damn it she was re-elected and re-elected.

She said in the House (approx) "I never thought I would see the day when a British Prime Minister was criticised for sinking an enemy ship in time of war". Spot on matey.

Best ever PM after Churchill. Blair a close third.
Well she wasn't very popular with me .Although I think she was quite popular with a mass murderer called Pinochet .
She must be worth mega bucks .Why should the taxpayer be expected to cough up to send her off in style.
Next thing you know we'll have everyTom Dick and Harry wanting a state funeral .Tut !
Italy was on the Allied side during the First World War, a member of the Axis during the Second World War. The point being that things change. You can't judge Thatcher by Pinochet as was then, anymore than you can criminalise the USA for supporting the Taliban against USSR when they did.

History and human experience never stand still. Life is now becoming a year-to-year struggle to hold the inevitable at bay. Just another war may gain another 5 years for the free world, buit nothing is permanent.
