Is it true that the Top Cat cartoon was called "Boss Cat" when it was shown over in the USA & changed its name to "Top Cat" when it was shown here in the UK?.If so can anyone please tell me why.

It's the other way round. In the UK the name "Top Cat" was in use by a cat food manufacturer at the time & the BBC couldn't be seen to advertise, even though the link was at best tenuous.
Even though the song was about 'Top Cat' and the other characters clearly called him 'Top Cat' or 'TC', and the altered title sequence was achieved by the clumsy insertion of a caption card over the formerly animated titles. Incidently, at least one series was shown as 'Top Cat' before the change.
Further useless fact - it was based on the Bilko TV show.
