I thought it was ok. bought the DVD. It is "Character driven"(which normally means its a pile of Sh*te). But I thought it was watchable. You wanna try watchin new Starsky & Hutch. I taped it off sky and cud not watch it all the way thro
It stinks big time. Started off great then looks like Speilberg got bored and rushed the ending. Lacks any suspense or tension at all. Effects are really good, but thats about it. Remember when Speilberg movies were events, like De Niro ones? Now they seem to be rattled off like nobodys business. Munich isnt a bad film, but this is Spielberg and should be better. WOTW is tripe though.
The new version with Tom Cruise lmao - whata waste of an hour and a half, I am soo glad I didnt buy it. The original I didnt like either BUT I do see the appeal and understand the status it has.
A very peculiar and ultimately disapointing movie for me. Individual scenes were wonderful (the first appearance and destruction, the Seek arm searching through the ruined cellar) but as a complete movie I thought it was very poor. No tension at all beyond the first 45 minutes, just endless scenes of mayhem and hopelessness, no coherent information on what was supposed to be happening elsewhere, and the whole thing just way, way too long..!! I agree with patc7641 - It looks like they got bored and rushed the ending. Personally, I always thought Tom Cruise was massively over-rated, and in this movie it really shows - but then I still haven't forgiven him for Nicole Kidman..!! :o)

Interesting you thought there was no tension. I thought it was gripping, right up to the rushed ending. Don't like films which leave too many questions - what was that plant stuff? Dakota Fanning could have done with a good slap, clearly a child from a broken home!

Like the idea we have earned the right to live amongst the micro-organisms and it's that which saved us.

Why can't someone do a WOTW movie that sticks more or less to the plot of the book. Jeff Wayne's musical version is pretty close, but I know of no film that is anywhere near. Probably 'cos American producers couldn't find Horsall Common on a map!!!!

i agree....when io first heard that they were doing this movie i got very excited with images running thru my mind of victorian england and then this turned up ! its ok but not great.

the reason it was rushed was because spielberg was scheduled to make 'munich' first but that got stuck on hold cos of legal wranglings so he made this whilst waiting for that to be sorted ! so from start to finish it was a rushed product.

Not a patch on the original with Gene Barry IMO but it was a relief to see Tom Cruise looking less than his usual perfect, almost chubby, almost human ;o)
i agree, the first hour was great, very threatening and menacing, then it goes off the rails and the end is just poor.
I enjoyed the film well enough, as a pure piece of escapism, but, the ending went beyond ridiculous!!

I don't think that this is Spielberg's fault necessarily. The problem is that the ending simply doesn't lend itself to a massive epic battle. The aliens simply die from Earth diseases. So no explosions, no fighting and no final battle. It's hard to inject tension into that, and so I wouldn't be too hard on him.

They also suffered from the fact that the aliens were written to be so powerful. They can't be stopped by anything humankind has to offer, so at no point would you be able to believe a situation where they were beaten, other than by an event such as disease.

I haven't seen it and don't intend to either judging by the reviews here and in press. Im my opintion, remakes have been very poor - King Kong (no big deal, watchable for Naomi Watts !), Time Machine (waste of time) and now War of the Worlds another turkey.
i personally enjoyed it, right up to the last scene, which let the whole film down.
I thought the film was Ok but lacked the certain adultness where most of it was trimmed to keep the certificate of the movie down.

I hooted at the bit when Tom Cruise's character went back to his car to find a plane had crash landed, convenienty leaving a neat trail to drive his car around.
Oh and without the "Eve of the War" intro it lacked the build up of tension to the film.

Don't know what I mean?

Try watchcing Starwars, the bit after the 20th Centrury Fox floodlights with the sound turned down.....
I agree the ending was too sudden and anticlimax
