It’s the rate of melting that is the issue not the fact they they doing so
naomi, The melting described in the book M. Portillo was reading, was probably seasonal warming. In those days people didn't really understand that too well.

i agree that seems to be a major problem, but how do we stop it.
The Covid vaccines have had an excellent effect, not only on Covid itself, but on STFUing the anti-vax and Covid-denying non-scientist conspiracy theorists who thought they knew better.

So now we're back to climate change. Shame there's not such a quick answer to that ...
bluemoon, I don't think so. It had been noted over a number of years.

Ichkeria, we know the rate at which the ice is melting is the issue, but I think records kept before the advent of major industry confirm that the problem is not solely due to human activity.
i meant the rate that people are dying from covid still around the world, 4,000 in one day in Brazil.
The idea that the rate of climate change is at least partially man made ought to give up hope as it means it is in our hands to do something about it.
Added to the fact that scientific advances make us better equipped to do just that
Who is willing to drastically change their lifestyle by giving up modern technology and the rest of their creature comforts? It’s pie in the sky - but it's a money spinner.
people will still drive, fly, even Greta must do that, work in heavy industry around the world, all supposed to be contributors to climate change. I think that it will be India, China, with their massive populations and emerging economies that will be at the forefront of this change,
Could we not use the ice from the ice age of the mid 2oth century to put the brakes on melting?
There must be some use for all that frozen water that caused so many problems in my childhood

The comments at 11.27 and 11.31 are a good example of what I meant earlier about guilt.

Plainly tho it comes down to more than people voluntarily or even non-voluntarily changing their lifestyle. Tho wading around neck deep in melted ice cap isn’t much of an alternative even were that the case :-)
As for “giving up modern technology”. I’m not sure what I’m earth that’s all about: modern technology is likely to be our saviour.
Ichkeria, ‘Guilt’? What guilt. I don’t feel guilty.

//As for “giving up modern technology”. I’m not sure what I’m earth that’s all about: modern technology is likely to be our saviour.//

Why are you not sure what that’s all about? We're told our lifestyle is causing the problem. If modern technology is likely to be our saviour it had better get a move on and offer us viable alternatives.
is turning to all electric cars, buses, taxis going to help us at all, green issues like wind farms, solar panels, all these are supposed to help the planet
Nobody watching the second episode, getting informed?
Attenborough is on, we like him don’t we?
Stickybottle - // Nobody watching the second episode, getting informed? //

If ever I wish to be informed about anything, ever, one of the last places I am going to look for information is programmes made about a shouty teenager with psychological issues, no real understanding of what she is talking about, and pushy immoral parents.
She always minds me on a beardless Stephen Merchant.
So you have no idea that the programme is not that much about her but is focussing on the science and the scientists themselves, along with the dramatic footage of climate change?
Never mind andy hughes it is probably of no use to you
no real understanding of what she is talking about

Yet David Attenborough champions her. I guess ignorance is bliss for you andy
Sticky - he was backing her from the beginning.

No one here has slated him for travelling all over the world.
In a hundred years time ......
