Does anyone know of a gadget that has lots of tools on but definitely has a tin opener on, but preferably no knife. No good for this time, but boy #1 is on a five day ambulance placement and is trying to cater for himself to some extent (he’s staying in a premier inn) but he’s bought a tin of fruit but has no opener. Thank you :)

Just teach him to buy tins with ring pulls in future.
He can get a tin-opener in Morrisons for about 60p and leave multi tools for another day. :-)

Did mention that earlier, but to be fair he’s organised his own accommodation, got there under his own steam and must be quite nervous - even now I’d live on Haribo and Dairylea dunkers for five days.

He doesn’t need it for this time, but he’ll have loads of other placements (I’m giving him brownie points for even considering fruit as a student).
It will be difficult to find a multi tool gadget that doesn't have a knife blade on it.
Why not a Swiss Army knife?
As long as the blade(s) don't lock open and are less than 3 inches in length they are legal to possess and carry in public with good reason.
No problem with him having one in his luggage at the hotel.
Hopkirk's answer might sound facetious but it's actually likely to be the best solution to the problem (and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it!).

Any 'multi tool' device that can open cans would almost certainly need to fall back on the old-fashioned 'stab and cut' type of openers that many people here will remember from their childhoods. e.g. https://tinyurl.com/y5coj8g4 or possibly the type of opener traditionally used by soldiers https://tinyurl.com/yypddm95 . Both are likely to end up with the user requiring medical attention when they slip! (It could be incredibly embarrassing for your son to need to call upon the services of his ambulance colleagues when he cuts himself badly!).

Other than using Hopkirk's solution, it might be simplest just to buy your son a modern rotary can opener.
would any of these basic ones do?

Some of them might also remove stones from horses' hooves but not a lot of other gadgets.

Buying tins that don’t need an opener is probably the way to go - neither of us had considered how he would feed himself seeing as it’s lockdown.
If he's in a Premier Inn can he not get them to open it for him?
When you need peaches, you need peaches...
I agree with Buenchico. I have got a couple of tools with jab and cut tin openers in and while they work, they are fairly risky bits of kit and leave a massively jagged tin....ok in an emergency but not the best idea.
Why doesn't he just buy fresh fruit to have in his room?
because then you have storage issues
Pot noodles might be another option, though admittedly not very nutritious.

He’s got a kettle but he likes proper food (the boy is surprisingly good at cooking now) - he won’t like to bother the reception staff. If he was based nearer his house he’d cook something for the next night and something for his lunch so he’s having to adapt. He’ll be flipping starving if he has to do five 12 hour (might be quite stressful) shifts without some decent grub. Hopefully the ambulance station will have a microwave so he can at least get one ping and ding meal a day.
Woofgang - no storage issues with fresh fruit if it's only for a few days. If for longer periods just buy it as and when.
Never seen these in person
