I have my old car up for sale. If I am luckily enough to sell it how best to take the payment? If we take a cheque then it can be cancelled before it clear, so can I ask for PayPal or cash? I suppose the other way is bank transfer but I don’t really want to hand out my bank details.
Thanks for any help

Cheers Rocky not talking about huge amounts no more than 1300 but obviously don’t want to get ripped off
If you accept a cheque he is giving the same bank details he would need to pay you by bank transfer, plus his signature. Bank transfer is perfectly safe, otherwise cash.

Cheers guys put it up yesterday got 2 interested parties already
You don't hand out your details for a bank transfer , from the buyer
I'm thinking of the buyer handing you a cheque made out to you from his/her bank
I would do bank transfer
As getting hold of cash in that amount is tricky for lots of people
The bank details you would give him are only the same ones printed on your cheques that you used to hand out freely.

If he or she can pay on their mobile, and you can check on your internet banking that the funds are received, then surely that is safe.
While we're on the subject - I can't remember the last time i wrote a cheque

Given that cheques has your account number and sort code - was there a prevelance of fraud being committed when cheques were being widely used ?
bank transfer is the best and safest way for all concerned, you hand out your bank details every day anyway.
I buy and sell cars/bikes regularly and I wont take cash or pay cash any more over £1000. Total palaver, you go to the bank, get it out then give it to someone who goes to the bank and puts in back in, madness!
bank transfer via banking app, I have bought and sold cars this way for a few years now, you can see instantly if you have the money in your account

Ok i have some offer to pay full price! As it’s a surprise present for someone also as they are isolated they are sending a courier want to pay by PayPal! Scam?
Question Author
Thanks Barry thought as much who offers to pay full price for a car with declarared issues
PayPal is fine but you should charge them extra to cover the fees which will be, probably, 3.4%.

Tora the email I received was word for word as per Barry response.
Ask yourself this, Martin. What is so special about your car that somebody is willing to pay full asking price without seeing it? Is it a rare model that only comes on the market once in a blue moon? Is it half the market price?
When I sold my car a few years ago the buyer was very obliging. I was worried about fake bank notes as there was a lot going round at the time so the buyer accompanied me to the bank and handed the money over himself.
I wish all buyers were like him but these days a bank transfer is just as good
