As I went to get a supermarket trolley to my surprise and delight I discovered that there was already a £1 coin in it. So I looked around and there was no obvious owner, so I used the trolley and after I had finished I kept it . ( free bottle of milk and a packet of malted milk biscuits )
What would you have done ?

I wouldn't have bothered with a trolley just for a bottle of milk and a packet of biscuits.
Somebody might have left it purposely to help someone like you.... :-)
This has happened to me. I left the £1 in the slot when I put the trolley back in the bay.
Put it in my purse.
jackdaw....johnny didn't say that was all he bought....

I do believe that it was left on purpose by a taxi user too lazy to walk and return it.
JD these were on top of what I went in for

I would have stolen it as well.
....we are talking about ONE POUND here, not the Crown jewels!
I think I'd have left it to someone else's conscience.

What makes you think that, when there was no obvious owner around? The previous user might have just forgotten about the coin in the slot.
I've done it myself. I was reminded of it by a woman after I'd just left the trolley in the bay, and she said "I wish I didn't need to worry about leaving pound coins behind."

It was near where the taxi pick up point is situated. So I assumed rightly or wrongly that that was the case
Bought a thunder ball lucky dip
We're obviously all very trustworthy around here in Suffolk, as hardly any supermarkets use the pound-in-the-slot system. However I've had a few quid out of abandoned trolleys outside the Stowmarket Lidl over the years.

can't you take them back and get tuppence for the empties, Chris?
Put it in the nearest charity box.
I thought you were going to say that after you had used the trolley you left the pound coin for the next person to discover.
I would have left it for the next person.

However my local Morrisons don't have them any more. They took out all the clips and put them in the£ slots.
