On todays programme the question was name a USA president which had an A in their surname .I said Martin Van Buren. Would people think this was a right answer?

Presuming the question was as direct as that with no qualifications - yes.
Well, I would. Did Richard mention him in his round up of low scores? I would have thought MVB would be a low scorer.
Sounds fine to me. First name: Martin; surname: Van Buren. Chambers Biographical Dictionary lists him under Van Buren, not Buren

I found it very odd that he has not mentioned in the low scorers but then do we seriously think 100 people answered the questions asked
Cleveland springs to mind.
And, of course Washington.
Some sources suggest that "van" may be regarded as a prefix to a surname. Perhaps this might be the reason why Van Buren was not included in the list?
I would have thought so. Anyone calling Dick Van Dyke "Dyke" would have been asking for a smack.
