27 years on and the bounty is raised. What would Mr Rushdie make of this news?

//A senior member of the editorial teams at the Fars News Agency told The Times: “Nobody in the world can nullify a religious fatwa. It has been, it is, and it will be.”//

I've no doubt Salman Rushdie is aware of that.
Islamic brutality against freedom of speech?
tell you what they have been a bit slow carrying out this fatwa, I'd have thought with all the Muslims dishing out death and destruction Rushdie would have been mopped up by now.

Naomi, I didn't understand the fatwa situation in that the pro-reform government under Katami distanced himself from it.

Is a fatwa capable of being expunged or once proclaimed does it remain in situ indefinitely?

Immaterial to Mr Rushdie though as you mention. Damage is done.
Question Author
TTT - Indeed. His security has been watertight.

Anyone know the extent of his public appearances?
yeah and guess who pays for his security?
A Fatwa has no legal significance whatsoever.

If bigots want to assassinate innocent people, they don't need the ramblings of a crazed religious bigot to do so.
Given the quality of his writing, I would up the bounty too.

DTC - Does his writing cause you to grimus? ;)
DTC....I thought "Midnights Children" was a very worthy winner of the Booker in 1981. Its a book I come back to every few years.
I can't recommend that anyone bothers to read it. I'm not sure what he was on when he wrote it, but it must have been cut with horse anaesthetic.
It's certainly flapping and flipping, agc!
/A Fatwa has no legal significance whatsoever./

apart from being an incitement to commit murder and therefore a criminal offence.
Disgraceful, at least we only prosecute and persecute writers we don't agree with. Still..... time yet.
scum religion....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
who is in your Fatwa sights, Togo, E.L. James perhaps?

Question Author
DB - I recently read 'Inferno'. Far too many in-depth location/history references :(
I did read the 'verses', incomprehensible mostly. But he has the right to ramble surely. Some on AB have expressed far worse views on the same subject without death threats. Now if someone starts a fund to retire Piers Morgan, well.....
