Do you get upset if you see someone on TV not wearing a poppy? If so, why?
Dont people have a choice? My uncle (mums brother) was 18 when he was shot and subsequently buried in France. I have so much respect for him, why do I need to show it by wearing a poppy? Why does wearing a flower..... from which opiates are manufactured.....have such an emotional impact?
I have never worn a poppy and never will. I give to collectors, but dont need to show it by wearing a flower that drug addicts die from.

I think you have your poppies mixed up.
The Flanders poppy is the corn poppy, not the opium poppy.
No I don't get upset and the ones on TV I think are part of the bandwagon effect. However the red poppy, although obviously related, is not what you get drugs (opium) from so that bit is irrelevant.
Ironically, the extract of opium poppies is also broken down into major pain killers like codeine and morphine, which no doubt are used on the battle field by medical personnel.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today they were talking about the different colours of poppies you can buy.
Red traditional
White for the pacifists
Black for the black community
And purple and blue for the animals that fought (played a part).
Oh my word, there's something about the voices of children that tears me up especially given the subject matter.
...massive lump in the throat :-(

No neither had I until today. I think they feel that they aren't represented. Can you buy a pink poppy?
Wearing a poppy denotes respect for lives lost for our liberty. Its also educational to teach following generations freedom is not free.
I have no objection that is what they fought and died for
Listening to this always gets to me
I challenge anyone - especially ones for whom the war (and wars generally) affect them deeply to watch the above video all the way through and not shed a tear or two.
LOL - I meant my one.
...then again.
I follow the RBL's stance on Poppy wearing and always have done, personal choice.

Also as stated the Flanders Poppy is not an opium poppy.
I wear a red poppy and always feel happy when I see others wearing one, especially my 18 year old colleague who did so with no prompting, but I don't get upset whwn people don't.

I've heard about the other coloured poppies, but never seen them either for sale or worn by anyone.

I really don't mind if people wear one or not (unless it's white, then I do object) I do object when people think it's a subject for humour!
That's interesting Baldric, what do you have against the wearing of the white poppy?
I don't get upset when I see someone not wearing a poppy but the "not poppy police" and the humorists do annoy me as much as the poppy police do. As others have said, you appear to have your poppies mixed up.....
That's interesting Baldric, what do you have against the wearing of the white poppy?

Because it is a mere affectation, designed to detract from the occasion and make a political point.
