Is Paul Nicholas still in EastEnders? What's he and his role been like? I read his character was going to be that soap's "nastiest villain ever" - that true or just hype?

Yep lame. Apparently Gavin owed a lot of money to gangster type money lenders and he needed to pay them back pronto, so they staged a road accident to claim life insurance.
