I was always very proud of the things I built with Meccano and Cranes were my 'speciallity'.

It has been suggested that Mecanno is introduced into schools to encourage girls to become interested in Engineering.

Hans.
Glad the Lecturer was wearing a hard hat! One of those 4" long pieces of tin can really hurt as it flutters down from on high. And a high-viz jacket so that he doesn't get hit by large prices of plant moving around the site. H&S gone mad again.
I grew up with Meccano as did my parents.
As my father said when I was young.

"Meccano is for future engineers, Lego is for future brick layers".

'Tis a shame that Meccano is no longer English, but long may it live.
Hence to say I never had a Lego set whilst growing up ;-(

I played and played and played with mine, as a boy. So much so, that the red paint started to wear off !

Wonderful toy...so much better than all these boring repetitive computer games that boys play with these. But maybe i am just an old fart !
Maybe you are Mikey..
..but you can't beat being creative with a few bits of metal and or plastic.
Who knows what can be built.
Err, I still play with Meccano, at my ripe old age.

But I try to ensure there are youngsters enjoying it with me ;-)
My youngest is 18 but we supply child minding and after school care.
A couple of weeks ago there was a 6 year old girl looking bored in our house.
I dragged out the Meccano set, showed her how to put things together and she then made a Meccano chicken that had flapping wings and moving legs.
I was impressed, a future engineer in the making.
As a kid, I had a Bayko building set and a Trix-Twin train set as well as a Meccano set. I don't think that Lego was around at that time.

Stuey...I also had a Bayco ! Again, a toy that kept on being inventive, although all those thin metal rods might give todays over-protective parents the willies !
Mikey, why is your age and the decades you have licked through such a badge of honour for you?

I apologise for asking and will happily be ignored but you do seem to make quite a deal of it and I wondered why.
Damned autocorrect ^^^ lived not licked!
Doubt that Meccano will ever lose it's appeal,Grandsons all still like it.
We had Lego and Meccano but they got overtaken (in terms of use) by Airfix, Heller, Tamiya and so on. I don't think 10 years' exposure to Humbrol paint, turpentine thinners and polystyrene glue did me any harm. (manic grin)

(It won't be long before these will be handy memory-jogger items in the old people's homes).

Eccles...I was not aware I am "making a meal" out of anything. This was on the BBC news website this morning, and I thought it might be of interest to some other people, which has proven to be the case.

Not sure why you want to know my age, but I have given a enough clues in the past.

You can look forward to me "making a meal" out of other things in the future, as I think fit.
Question Author
Mamy...glad its still popular with your grandkids !

I did try it with one of my nephews, along with Airfix, but it went down like a lead balloon ! His exact words when he opened his Airfix Spitfire kit, when he was about 10, was :::

"But you have to make it Uncle Mike ! "
Mine went through a phase of MagnaStix, fun but hateful as the ball bearings went everywhere - glad when that fad faded.
Mikey, thank you for your response and not addressing and mis reading my question.
Question Author
I am indebted to Stuey, for stirring my memory of Bayco Building Kits !

Here is a link that some may find interesting. Does anyone else remember playing with this toy as a child ?

Eccles...I wouldn't dream of remarking on typo....everybody can be guilty of a typo once in a while.........even perfect people like you and I !
