I thought he was embarrassing and think most of the audience, not a lot laughed through sympathy because of his age.

Yes. I watched his intro of Jonathan Ross with "knitted brows". It was embarrassing and rather sad.

Its sad now rather than anything else

His microphone didn't work properly and I think it through him a bit. He was cracking jokes that just weren't funny and then having to try to get the audience to laugh.
