In my contract it states that i am entitled to a 30 minute unpaid meal break. It also states that on occasions it may be necessary to suspend the taking of breaks in the event of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances. Currently breaks are being cancelled (whilst the we are mid way through the 30 mins) for jobs that we anticipate will occur, so hardly unforeseeable. Although we do receive overtime for this, or the time given back, we receive no allowance for wasted hot food (shift work) and we are now debating how this fits in with the regs. In essence we cannot leave the premises where other staff who work for the same company in the offices can go out for lunch uninterrupted.
