School enquiry
My son, aged 11 was involved in a fight during lunch time. He was headbutted and left with a black eye,bruises on the left handside of his face His lip was bust open as he has a brace and it cut into his lip. He was not without blame but the other boy didnt receive any injuries (my son couldnt fight to save his life) My question is. He was left in this state all afternoon. I wasnt contacted in any way. He was sent home at 3.30 with a letter saying he had been involved in a fight. That was that. Should I have been contacted or was it OK to leave an 11 year with quite severe injuries. School have not spoken to me or contacted me to discuss.

If he was given first aid at school and was considered to be fine to carry on with lessons, I see no reason for the school to contact you especially. Wasn't it SAT's this week? they would have been important.

The school should have contacted you out of courtesy marie1234, but I don't think they have to unless there is serious injury.My eldest daughter was once kept at school all day after breaking her ankle at morning assembly,she was allowed to walk around all day with a ridiculously swollen ankle,when she was fetched home by a friend of mine I took one look at her and took her to hospital,the school then told me I had to keep her at home for the whole 6 weeks she was in plaster! The same daughter also bit straight through her tongue in reception class and was kept at school until hometime and I was not even told,my daughter just poked her tongue out and said "look what I did mummy". Kids have accidents and they fight,you just have to accept this really or you'll be grey haired before your time. If you feel the school should have told you then I would speak to them after half term and tell them that if anything similar happens again you wish to be informed immediately.

All teachers have got sh!t for brains � that is why they are teachers.
At the school I attended, the nurse did not have rudimentary knowledge of First Aid; thinking about it, most of the teachers had little or no knowledge of the subject they were teaching.
I would not let the teachers at my old school take charge of my dog, let alone a child - your experience would suggest nothing has changed since I was at school, all those years ago.

If you feel the school has dealt with it unsatisfactorily then contact "The Schools Liasion Officer" or SLO at the local cop shop.
Yes the school should deal with minor assaults but there is no reason why the police shouldn't be involved.
Also consider sending your boy to Judo classes.
Out of ALL the martial arts and boxing, Judo is by far the best means to defence. And has no glamour or bracdo attached to it like Kung Fu or Karate.

I have a twelve year old boy too. I remember that whenever he was injured the school would contact me, I think that's required by"law", because he is a minor. O.K. they have given him first aid and assesed his state as probably o.k.to stay in school for the rest of the day, but you should have been contacted and asked for opinion whether you will pick him up or leave for the rest of the day.
Another important thing...MAKE SURE you ask to see "accident book" they should have filled in on the day of the accident. Accident book is important for the future, if your boy's injuries turn into something nasty in the futute, all kids are inssured on the school premises, as well as the staff and visitors, possible compensation in the future.
