register a baby at birth with a sir name to which the mother was only know as,and didnt give the baby her own legal sir same surely this cant be right ,also to add her father is unknow this took place 20 plus years ago thanks in advance for any advice

The registrar just needs to know the forename(s) and surname in which it is intended that the child will be brought up. So you can give a child any surname you like.

Yes you can give a child any name you like you can make it up on the spot if you like, even something really silly like Fyffy trixabell, but no one would do that.....hang on!

A friend of mine did this when her son was born. As she and her sister were the only ones left in the family line, and both had taken married names, she gave her son her maiden surname. May seem a bit strange, but her hubby didn't mind at all!
