How could committing this offense affect your professional life? What do you think are some of the main reasons why students plagiarize? What types of penalties do you think are appropriate for intentional and unintentional plagiarism?

There's no such thing as "unintentional plagiarism". Very few ideas really are original.
Students- cheating, lack of confidence, laziness...
It would certainly affect your professional life if you were researching, as nobody would trust you.

few politicians have mis-said their degrees

science grads - they leave science if they find out

students plagiarising - undoubedly laziness

penalties for students - do the essay again, not otherwise.

in a minor election 2000, a president of a council demanded I change an election address. Even in England, that should be someone's own production and no unwanted interference. I complained without much result - and a voter wrote in and said that it was obvious that my election address had been mangled by a third party .....

outside independent complaint..... big trouble

o god lessons were learnt. It became obvious to him that if I were not re-elected ( I was re-elected- complaint Fails) - the President would have to have gone - along with me.
