I cancelled my DD with them two days ago and today I received a snotty email asking me to set up another DD straight away or risk having my licence revoked, and my details given to a Debt Collection agency.
My licence does not run out until Jan. 31st 2022.
Is this how they go about their business?

TV Licencing can be a pain in the armpit. A couple of years ago, I was one day late in paying. OK, it was a day late but they pursued me for 6 weeks and threatened me with prosecution, despite proof that I had paid. In the end, they blamed me because they said I hadn't read the numbers off my card clearly enough on the auto payment line. I pointed out that the fee had left...

yes
Is it a yearly direct debit?
ps if you dont pay your monthly (?) dd's your license will run out before 22

Yes mate. Paid in full and good until end of Jan. next year.
It's the one bill I don't pay by DD. I always pay it in full each year.
If you arent in debt - then you arent in debt ( make sure ) so you can ignore - oh if they do - allege maladministration ( data protection ) because they are using your data outside the obvious remit
( no debt)

you could write to them and say that ( dont bother to phone) but the script has to be more formal Dear Sir, la-dee-dah, - and less - "yeah foo mate what dis all about den?"
yeah so do I missie but we are where we are innit?
Question Author
Not in debt. They take the full amount every year by DD. Their email is a 'don't reply' address. Am going to ignore them and then just watch catch up and YouTube from next year when it runs out.
Ooh, you really are a rebel.

(Why did you cancel you direct debit, by the way)
I wouldn't worry about it. I've forgotten to pay mine loads of times and nothing has happened to me. I even had them knock at my door. I told them to be quiet so my OH doesn't hear them and promised to pay it the next day (which I did)
You need to be careful.

//"yeah foo mate what dis all about den?"//

"What dis all about den" is that TV Licencing operate a very strange DD setup. You pay for your annual licence by means of six instalments before it expires and six after it expires. This means that your previous licence which expired in Jan 21 was paid for by six payments before then (say Jul 20 to Dec 20) and six payments afterwards (say Jan 21 to Jun 21). This means you have only just begun to pay for your licence which expires next year although you have benefitted from it for half the year (in fact, depending on the exact dates, you may not have paid anything at all towards it yet).
It's illegal to watch catch-up without a licence isn't it?

Yes it is.
Question Author
Because I intend to watch catch up from next year. Won't need a license. Need to ease my way into it though.
Stop being silly.

If you watch catch up without a licence you will be breaking the law.

If you make no further payments now your licence will be revoked (because you have paid little or nothing towards it yet). They will also seek to recover the debt you owe for the six months you have had your current licence.

I am fully paid up until Jan 31st 2022 via a DD in Jan. This year for the full amount. I am not cancelling the licence if I were they would owe me money. Catch up is fine but I cannot record live Tv.
