Is it true that at some point this year holders of paper licences will be forced to get photo card ones? I think I read it somewhere but I cannot find anything about it now, thanks.

as far as i'm aware you're ok with a paper license until you're seventy
it says 70 on mine. not very fair changing things, imo.
I saw a report in the last year that suggested 2015 would be when photocard licences would be mandated, in accord with the relevant EU Directive.
It would be a disgusting act if brought in. It would be ID Cards 'by the back door' for all save those they would have forced to no longer drive in order to avoid it. Control freakery at its most obvious. I trust this is a rumour only.
I will not give up my ( held together with sellotape ) paper licence - how dare they

Mr farage - here's my vote

Sounds a bit hysterical OG, photo licences are here already, all they'd be doing is mopping up those that still have the old format. Not sure how that constitutes ID cards by the back door. Not everyone has a driving licence for a start. I know a few people with bus passes and they have their picture on too.........it's conspiracy I tell ya!
Rumour, Old Geezer? 'fraid not.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20968886 and see under the mid-heading "checking your licence".
I keep seeing this absolute fear of ID cards, why, why, why. I cannot emphasize enough that we all SHOULD have ID cards then we can determine who's who in this country & sort out once & for all who are here illegally & send them packing.
Get 'em done now while they're 20 quid folks as I've no doubt the price will rise by next year, or very soon after.
All renewals and change of detail will result in the issue of a photo card licence otherwise there are no plans at present to replace paper ones. All photo cards have to be renewed every 10 years to keep the photo 'current'.
what bothers me more than needing a photo with this change is the amount of reported instances of blind incompetence by the DVLA - in particular, those who send their licences off, only to find them returned with half their existing competencies expunged, and no recourse other than to pay to re-sit the requisite driving tests again.....
Spot on whiskeryron !
/we all SHOULD have ID cards then we can determine who's who in this country/

Just seems like a massive business opportunity for counterfeiters

I'm glad I've found someone else at last who agrees, I thought I was the only one.
Used to ID Cards from when I was in the Navy.
Had loads and it never bothered me
Similarly to me in the RAF. I just find it difficult to understand the reluctance of the apparent majority.

Yes WR, those bits of printed cardboard must have really banjaxed any enemy infiltration LOL

I don't want to turn this into an ID cards discussion, please stay on topic!
/I just find it difficult to understand the reluctance of the apparent majority/

1. they will be expensive but pointless. They will not 'determine who's who in this country' because the counterfeiters will keep step with the security measures just as they do now with Passports and Driving Licences.

2. The State has shown itself many times over to be incompetent and negligent with mega IT projects and safeguarding our personal data - an ID card system would be both.
