13 Down - Put pound on 5 in endless trial giving tit for tat (4,3,3)

I have ?U?D?R?Q?O and know it is quid pro quo, but why? Apart from the "pound" part of the clue equating to quid, I am at a loss.

quid pro quo
Quid Pro Quo?
could 5a/5d indicate the 'qu' part of the answer?

quid pro qu o(f)
Is the answer to 5 'quart/er'?

Quid pro [qu]o(f) - endless 'proof' (trial) (?)
Quid = pound, 5 anne=qu, endless trial=proo(f)
