You can bring back as many as you like within reason, i think its about 3000 ciggies per person.
I would'nt buy them in france as the prices are very similar to here and more expensive in some cases.
get them on the ferry it will be much cheaper.

Dave.
For personal use you are allowed to bring back from an EU country a maximum of 3200 cigarettes OR 3Kg of rolling tobacco each. As Webbo says France is expensive so take a detour into Belgium where prices are cheaper.
Not strictly true about the 3kg limit.

There is no limit to the amount of tobacco you can bring back from France since you have already paid the taxes, provifing it is for your own use (ie you are not going to flog it when you get back)

Customs may well start to ask questions if you have more than 3kg each, but that does not mean you are not allowed, it just means you need a plausible reason.

If you (or one of your mates) bring back more than the limit, and it is concealed (by a coat for example) and the officer asks you if you have anything to declare and say no, then your car is liable to seizure. The amount you are asked to pay to 'buy it back' (known as restoration) will depend on the severity of the offence, but could be the full value.
