Hi Good Folks of the Answerbank
I recently paid off my credit card by calling and asking for a closing balance, I paid the amount agreed and was happy to be out of debt! The bank sent me a letter confirming that my account was now closed, great!

Now 3 months later they have contacted me for the 'outstanding balance'. After much discussion, they have listened to the recording of the full conversation that took place, and agree that the final balance was agreed and paid. However, they now say that a mistake (human error) was made and that I am still liable for the balance.

I'm really aggrieved by this, They are now continuing to add monthly charges to an account this is ... closed! If anyone could anyone let me know where I stand legally it would be really appreciated, i'd much prefer to be in your debt of gratitude. I still have the letter from the bank confirming closure, but they have sent a letter stating they will no longer discuss the matter. Any advice would be really warmly received.

Many Thanks for taking the time to read this

Sorry smiler I don't have the answer but as your question was so polite, I thought I'd 'bump' it for you. My only suggestion would be to go to the financial ombudsman http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumer/complaints.htm

There are three threads on this so it may be better to post answers on the thread that has the most responses

Thanks Zacs, you're a gentleman :)
Factor-Fiction, I initially posted in the personal finance area, but was advised it may be worth posting in the law section, i'm not spamming! really! :)
it does get very confusing if you post several times - there are responses on the other one too!
Why not tell them you will pay the outstanding balance if they agree to cancel the further charges added during the period of dispute.
I hope you can keep track of all the suggestions across all three threads!
This sort of thng comes up a lot and really boils down to this. Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of their administration and any errors in their calculations do you accept you owe what they claim you owe? If the answer is yes then they have a right to claim it regardless of administrative errors. You may be able to get them to waive charges if you pay up. If the answer is no, then they are acting erroneously as far as you are concerned, then you need further explanation as to what they claim you owe. Do you understand the amount they claim you owe? Can you see what they are talking about?
smiler's had a letter saying he doesn't owe anything though, after paying in full. I don't get it.
