either that or you mean 'counsellor'

Rather disturbingly you don't need any qualifications to call yourself a counsellor and start practising - never mind getting onto a training course.

However, assuming that you want to be competent, (and assuming that you don't want to be a councillor) then I would have a look at this site http://www.bacp.co.uk/education/training.html

If you want a good grounding in the theories and so on then I would recommend sociology and psychology at A level and a degree in psychology. Obviously this depends where you are at in terms of education at present.

There is nothing to prevent you joining any number of courses in counselling regardless of qualifications. BACP and / or your local adult education college should be able to point you towards courses in your area. You might want to consider what type of counselling you are interested in as there are a spectrum of theoretical approaches and psychotherapy can be quite different to cognitive counselling.
