Without family, an employer that thinks you can do the job better than any american, or loads of money i don't think the chances of you going to live permenantly in america are high, see this page http://www.h1base.com/page.asp?id=8

my advice is wait until democracy is restored, or get shed loads of money - i think the shed loads of money option might be the quickest route

Waiters and waitresses do well out there on account of tips.  It should be pretty easy to find a job as a waiter out there ( and your boyfriend too)

My wife and I just recently moved from the US to the UK.  I am a student, but my wife has had a really hard time finding a job.  I also recommend saving as much money as possible  before moving.  If you are moving from the UK, the fact that the pound is much stronger than the dollar will be a little helpful.  This difference in currency made it very difficult to adjust to the UK.
Well one possibility is to check out some chain restaurants/stores/etc websites and apply online for a florida location. You can also find a hundred sites dedicated to apartments and houses for rent/sale. Just Google "florida apts rent" or "starbucks job" or whatever you can think of to get you started. It will take you a while to get everything ready to actually GO, so in the mean time save up as much as you can and do lots of reseaarch! Once you get there you can begin looking for better jobs and new friends.
Best of luck!
