Can anybody help - is it possible to take a GCSE exam without having done the appropriate course beforehand, ie could you just study using books etc, and then put in for the exam?  If so how do you go about this, would you just contact a local college with regards to sitting the exam?

It will depend whether the course involves doing marked coursework modules or not.  Otherwise you should contact one of the exam boards to see wther you can take the exam (for a fee of course).  See below:
