two jobs?

I work full time as a receptionist but in the current economical climate i am finding, even with my husbands wages we are findng ourselves, not short but just low on funds.
Now if i where to take a second job, doing say a few hours a week in a supermarket how would this effect my tax etc?Or could i transfer all tax/national insurance deductions onto my second wage so i would not loose so much from my full time job?
Just looking for some advice thats all.Cheers guys

hi firewatch. what your employers should do is....

on your main/higher income, you would have your tax code allowance. on any other income, you would be taxed at Basic Rate (20% of those earnings)
you would still have national insurance deductions on both (as far as i am aware), as long as your earnings meet or are above the NI earnings threshold (approx �465 a month at the moment I think). So possibly, depending on your hours for the 2nd job, you maybe wouldnt pay NI on it?

Yes, the above is broadly correct.
I wouldn't try mucking around with your main job - they will end up paying the same in NI and tax whatever happens.
Leave the main job with your tax code. Your second job will be coded as BR, meaning basic rate tax is deducted (20%). Your main job NI is unchanged. You will pay NI also on the second job if your earnings exceed the threshold of just over �100 per week.

I don't know if it's exactly the same but I'm registered as self-employed and pay a basic rate of tax (20%) on this income. My main job remains unchanged with my tax / NI

I did enquire a while back about taking on a second job as an employee and I was led to believe as Buildersmate says, that this will be calculated as a Basic Rate. I would not change anything with your main job, as that is what it is - just make sure your second job is calculated as BR and you should be fine.
