HI all,can anyone tell me if you can be forced to whare one of these obnoxious name badges at work,i work in the rail industry and my company have recently introduced these and have insisted i put it on while on duty even though i object,i would'nt mind having one with my personel number on it or a number allocated to the staff were i work ,so if the police ,traffic attendents etc don't have where them in public (they have numbers) can i be forced to...thanks.

Go on strike and cripple the country's network.

Isn't that what rail workers do whenever they have a sulk at management?
Is it that you don't want people stalking you or other wise bothering you? Cos if so, you need to say this to your line manager - it's a reasonable fear. One place i worked at allowed front of house staff to have badges with 'work names' on that weren't their real names, so public couldn't take the 'I know where you live' line with them, and it might be that yours does similar. I am afraid however that being badged up is just an expectation now. In a sense, it can also protect you - it says you are officially on business for XYZ and not some random nutter. Increasingly these badges also act as magnetic door passes and so feed into staff time monitoring, and it really is no good fighting it if your works is going down that route.
Plus, I think your point about an ID number is reasonable - put it to your manager reasonably, or ask your union rep to do it for you.

ah well, yet another person who hides behind the keyboard to abuse other ab's..i will treat you with the same pity i treat junkies, neds, chavs and fare dodgers i come in daily contact with, shake my head and hope your life will improve to the stage that you feel you do not need to abuse fellow human beings..but please mamjet feel free to expand on your statement and explain why my not wanting to ware a name badge in public is part of the reason the country is in such a state.
david21,

David21, I totally agree with you, I hate those stupid name badges, If someone did come up to you in your work would they really read you name tag and say, David could you help me? I don`t think so. I bet the one who thought these tags uo doesn`t run about with one on him or her self?
As a matter of interest, do mamjet and delboy work in sectors where the public take a liberty and can be unpleasant and threatening? If so I respect their views, however their random drive-by unpleasantness suggests to me a more cosy existence.
i started working only few days, my name badge was crewed by my puppy, i havnt wear it since...
I'm a bus driver and consequently have a PCV licence no. which up to a few years ago had to be displayed in a 'visible' position. This is no longer the case, but the Companies now issue a 'badge' to be used in a similar fashion.

At the same time they also thought it was a wizard idea to have everyone wear a name badge as well! Eventually after some arguments they agreed we did not have to use our real name.

We all decided together to have our pseudonym names put on our badges. We all chose the Managing Directors name as our pseudonyms!

For some unknown reason the name badge idea was dropped. Not sure why!

:)
Of course you don't have to wear a name badge. Simply resign in protest, and let someone who actually wants to work for a living do your job.

mamjet,my apologies for my tardy reply but i have been out working for a living,(5.am till 15.00 hrs) and have done so since i was 12 years old, starting with milk rounds and paper round in the evening then on to full time employment when i was 15 and have NEVER signed on or had any other hand out/up from the government or anyone else,it seems to me you are the type of insecure ,insular person that must have the last word to satify your own self indulgent needs,if you do not have any thing constructive so post why do you waste your energy. i think...sorry, know that you are the type of person that made me want to post my query in the first place.
Wear the ******* badge.
At my last place we had to wear them, but after complaints they agreed to first name and initial.

However I insisted on my full name. If someone wanted to write and complain about me, I wanted my name spelt right in the letter!

I fail to see what the worry is in showing your name.

mamjet, your intellect is awesome it is only matched by your rapier wit,you betray thousands of tears of human advancement every time you strike the keyboard.....i do not normally resort to name calling but i will make an exception in your case...you are a cretin of the highest regard, may your arse be infested by the fleas of a thousand camels and your arms drop off.....panic button please see above for the reason i do not want to ware a badge, dealing with idiots like mamjet who call you by your name as if they know and then swear at you....p.s why does'nt mamjet use his (real)name on answerbank?
mamjet always posts cr@p. Just ignore it.

I have to wear a name badge but as I don't live in the area I work, I don't care if people know my name or not.
david21, if this is the way you normally act no wonder you get abuse hurled at you.
wear the badge and try and stop acting like a petulant child.
Now go stamp those tickets!
