summative means that the essay will be marked, and the marks will count towards something - is it a course you are doing? In my course we had formative and summative essays to produce ... the summative ones were the ones you had to pass to progress on the course - the formative ones were ones that developed your essay writing skills and were marked, but didnt count towards your final mark or your outcome on passing the course.
