the best way to get a 17 year old to do something is to tell them they cant do it! Stubborn creatures who will do anything to go against you!

Other than that...whenever he asks for something you could say no as its about time he earned himself some pocket money....worked for my nephew. He wanted some playstation games but my brother wouldn't buy them for him....in the end he got himself a Saturday job and when he had his first wage put in his hand it changed him completely. Was so excited.....ended up not buying all the games he wanted but saved for driving lessons and now also works some evenings and is saving for a car! It's changed him from being bone idle to actually enjoying working as he knows he'll get money and also he spends it much slower now that he's earned it for himself. Before it'd be gone before it reached his pocket!

don't give him money, buy the job paper and circle suitable ad's and make him an appointment at the local careers centre.

Tough love

take the playstation off him!!

Have a look at this organisation - residential voluntary work in UK. You get bed, board, pocket money, and a life defining experience. An excellent thing for all youngsters - especially bored or goal less ones.

I have the very same prob with my 17 year old son, hes been unemployed now for 9 months.

I don't give him any money, but he has 4or 5 friends who all have jobs and seem content to keep him.

Keep him starved of money, and every week present him with a bill for the cost of his keep. For every week that he doesn't pay up, give him another with the arrears showing. If he's not into further education, he needs to realise thathe now has to take responisbility for himself. If you want to be really tough, give him a deadline to find a job and tell him that until he does, it's "bed and breakfast" only and that "evening meal and laundry" is only included when he starts earning his keep and paying for it. . You'll have to be firm though and not relent when he's hungrily eyeing the delicious dinner you've just cooked for yourself !
